The area of the Biokovo-Imotski Lakes Geopark is territorially located in the Republic of Croatia, in
central Dalmatia, in Split-Dalmatia County, which is the largest county of the Republic of Croatia
(with a total surface area of 14,106.40 km2). The total surface area of the geopark amounts to 533,20
km2 (the westernmost points is at: x_lon: 531815, y_lat: 4806942; the northernmost point: x_lon:
547216, y_lat: 4822207; the easternmost point: x_lon: 564818, y_lat: 4797813; the southernmost

Geopark Biokovo-Imotski Lakes includes the areas of three cities: Imotski, Makarska and Vrgorac, and
thirteen municipalities: Zagvozd, Brela, Baška Voda, Tučepi, Podgora, Šestanovac, Zadvarje, Proložac,
Podbablje, Zmijavci, Lokvičići, Lovreć and Runovići. Most of the territories of the mentioned cities
and municipalities are included in the area of the Geopark. When defining the boundary of the
Geopark, the boundary of the protected area of the Biokovo Nature Park in the south was taken into
account, and towards the interior, this boundary follows the full administrative boundaries of the
municipalities of Imotska Region. Therefore, the northern border of this area is also the state border
between the Republic of Croatia and the Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina, while the southern
border coincides with the border of the Biokovo Nature Park.
Biokovo Mountain, with its highest Peak of St. George, stretches through this geographically unique
area. St. George Peak, rising 1762 meters above sea level, is the third highest mountain peak in the
Republic of Croatia. The City of Imotski is the largest administrative center of the Geopark, and the
location of the Geopark headquarters. The advantageous geographical location of the Geopark
Biokovo-Imotski Lakes is evident in the proximity of urban centers and other major destinations: Split
(87 km), Dubrovnik – UNESCO World Heritage Centre (183 km), Zagreb – capital city of Croatia (460
km), Plitvice Lakes National Park - UNESCO World Heritage Centre (300 km), Zadar (207 km) and
Sarajevo – the capital city of Bosnia and Herzegovina (160 km). The traffic connection is good with
one major highway (A1) which runs through the Geopark area, the railroad which connects Zagreb
and Split, and airports in the cities of Split, Dubrovnik and Zadar.
